Our Impact

Organizational Achievements:

- We re-branded and re-invented Foster Skills.

- Launched New Foster Skills Website.

- Added 2 new portfolio items: fostercard and ratemyfosterhome.com.

- Established 22 partnerships; Opportunity Nation, City Awake, Smarterer, State Street, Boston Children's Hospital, and many more!

- Joined the Grads of Life Coalition.

- Attended four (4) Conferences relating to foster care; University of Pennsylvania's Youth Aging Out Conference and Columbia University's Foster Care Journalism Conference.

- Our Founder led a team of StartingBloc Fellows during the Boston Social Innovation Challenge that rapid prototype new innovations in the foster care space. Check out what happened, here.

- Produced a literature review on foster care.

- Conducted a series of interviews with our board members on foster care, see youtube channel.


Youth-Related Achievements:

- Northeastern University's D'Amore McKim School of Business put on a career-panel with foster youth.

- Worked with and engaged 470 Youth


- Performed 82 How To's (ie. How to Build Resilency, How to Find Housing)

- Launched MVP versions of MyHome and Got Skills? Foster Youth Workforce Program.

- Launched Foster Youth in Action Initiative

- Recorded an original song (The Foster Skills' Theme Song); Love From. We had one of Boston's artist talk to foster youth and write the jingle.

- Developed Foster Youth Handbook 2.0 with Massachusetts Court of Improvement

- Created a motion graphic explaining why youth are in foster care, see here.

- Participated in Youth Radio's live web chat about connecting young people to job pathways.

- Had dinner and hangout time every Wednesday for 6 months at Home For Little Wanderers Young Adult Resource Network

Policy-Related Achievements:

- We helped to write and inform S. 27 and S. 657; Educational Stability, and Sibling Visitation.

- We helped to write and inform One Judge, One Family;

- Informed Massachusetts State Senators and Office of Child Welfare respondents on issues facing foster youth;

- We were invited by the COA to revamp new foster care standards;

- We organized two social protest at the State House on behalf of foster youth; State Rep. Gloria Fox and Boston City Councillor Tito Jackson attended.

- Our Founder sits on the Massachusetts Aging Task Force's Executive Committee and is working to inform housing policy on behalf of foster youth.

Awareness- and Partnership-Related Achievements:

- Supported Together We Rise's Holiday Toy Campaign & One Simple Wishes 'Miles for Smiles Tour'

- Put on journalism and juvenile justice panel
with Governor Dukakis, Judge Harris, and Dr. James Fox.

- Our Founder attended and spoke at the Opportunity Nation Conference.

- Our Portfolio Manager presented Got Skills? Workforce Program at Northeastern University's Research Symposium.

- Our Founder gave (2) TEDx talks; TEDxNortheasternU and TEDxTeachersCollege.

- Our Founder was invited to speak at the Boston Children's Hospital Management Rounds.

- We partnered up with FosterMore/ ABC Family to promote fostering!

- We participated in Casey Families Tweet-Up, and held our own tweet-up using hashtag #innovatefostercare.

- Our Founder was invited to be the Keynote Speaker at United Way Youth Venture Kick-Off and a Plenary Speaker at the Opportunity Nation Conference.

- Our Founder was the Newton METCO graduation commencement speaker.

- We participated in City Awake, Civic Innovation Challenge, and General Catalyst Entrepreneurs Forum.

- We published 9 foster-care-related articles in Huffington Post, Buzzfeed, and the Stanford Social Innovation Review.

What our our future plans and dreams?

- Working with the Massachusetts Court of Improvement Program to deliver the "Answer Books" to 500 students.

- Piloting Got Skills? workforce development program to create more access to the workforce.

- Revamping MyHome, which is in MVP stage (click here).

- Launching ratemyfosterhome.com.

- We have partnered with The Department of Children and Families to bring to life the PAYA curriculum.

- Putting together a series of How To's on our Youtube Channel.

- Authoring a short life skills advice book and/or how to create a social enterprise book to sell on IndieGoGo.

- Enaging experienced researchers around: What child first and friendly actually means, and how would you theoretically go about funding it?

- Creating an Income-Generating-Activity (IGA) to become financially sustainable.

- Building a niche-specific resource system--in which we string together organizations that can perform niche-specific actions.

- Putting on a Hack-a-thon at top business schools and a Shark Tank-like event for foster youth and parents to pitch us ideas.

-Developing a large community that can co-create and design new solutions with foster youth, parents, and the general public!
